When Kelly first installed her solar system, she thought she’d scored instant, automatic energy savings. But as costs crept up and her bills remained inconsistent, she realised there was more to energy efficiency than simply having solar panels. That’s when a friend introduced her to EnergyFlex, and her journey to mastering solar usage – and cost-cutting – began.
Approximately two years before learning about EnergyFlex, Kelly and her husband invested in a 12.5-kilowatt solar system with a 10-kilowatt inverter. And although it helped offset some of their energy costs, they didn’t have a battery or a clear understanding of when to use energy, so their bills still fluctuated. “Solar made an initial difference, but I realised I wasn’t using it as efficiently as I could,” Kelly explains.
Using EnergyFlex helped Kelly unlock her solar system’s full potential. “I used to think our solar system couldn’t run the dishwasher and washing machine simultaneously,” she says. “Now I know we produce more than enough energy during the day, and EnergyFlex’s graphs taught me how to fine-tune our usage further.”
Since adopting the app’s strategies, Kelly has reduced her bills to some of the lowest her family has ever seen. “It’s like a game,” she shares. “I constantly try to optimise our usage and see how much we can improve our rating.”
Through EnergyFlex, Kelly quickly learned to adjust her energy habits to align with solar production. “I now check our solar output before running appliances. If it’s sunny, I’ll start the dishwasher right away. If not, I’ll set a timer or run it the next day,” she says.
She’s also shifted her mindset to focus on making daytime energy work for her. For example, she’s started charging devices, like power banks, during solar hours. Her husband has also jumped in to help with the pool vacuum so she can switch it on during the day and off at night.
Kelly’s initial EnergyFlex Rating hovered around 2.5 during winter. But she quickly got on top of it and reached a 3.5 monthly Rating with an average of 3.3 over three months. “It’s like an appliance rating – the higher the stars, the better,” she says.
For Kelly, EnergyFlex is her go-to tool for cutting costs and building better energy habits. “I’ve already told friends and clients about it,” she says. “It’s informative, easy to use, and helps you make the most of what you have.”
