EnergyFlex, an Australian veteran-owned energy analytics, and renewables education company, today announced the launch of its energy management app designed to empower households and businesses to save on energy costs, reduce their carbon footprint, and benefit from the renewable energy transition.

A free-to-use, first-of-its-kind solution in Australia, EnergyFlex calculates a unique EnergyFlex Rating out of 5, providing a clear measure of a business or household’s renewable energy use. A low rating indicates higher fossil fuel reliance, while a higher rating reflects greater use of renewables from the grid or on-site electricity generation assets.

EnergyFlex provides site-specific, reportable insights into energy consumption patterns and associated Scope 2 carbon emissions and guides business and residential consumers through energy use changes that could significantly reduce their carbon and energy costs.

Energy as an asset, not just a cost

Powered by Consumer Data Right (CDR)-protected smart meter data and a patent-pending algorithm, EnergyFlex helps businesses understand how they use energy and benchmarks their electricity costs and environmental performance.

It then helps businesses to maximise the value of their Energy Asset by changing the timing of their energy use to align with renewables and increase their energy productivity.

EnergyFlex’s clear, data-driven ‘Next Best Actions’ make sustainability actionable and cost-effective, allowing consumers to underpin their operational viability, while reducing their environmental impact.

This unique rating system provides a rewards framework that governments, employers, communities, and families can use to incentivise participation in the energy transition and dramatically improve renewable energy consumption behaviours.

EnergyFlex, supported by CBA

EnergyFlex has entered into a unique referral agreement with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to empower CBA’s small business customers to embrace the renewable energy transition, improve their business resilience and viability, and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

Available through CBA’s award-winning Sustainability Action Tool (SAT), EnergyFlex gives CBA customers another tool to help them along their sustainability journeys, understand their carbon footprint, and invest in sustainable options for their businesses, for free.

EnergyFlex in action

Early testing by Beefy’s, a small bakery on the Sunshine Coast, resulted in an 18% reduction in annual energy bills, a 40% reduction in demand charges, and emissions reductions of 23 tonnes. The bakery increased its EnergyFlex Rating to 3.3, from 3.1, indicating an increased use of cleaner, cheaper renewable energy.

“We weren’t aware of the value of our Energy Asset and were grappling with limitations in energy supply due to the capacity of the local transformer. This restriction not only hampered our growth prospects but also resulted in significant demand charges, which went towards cancelling the benefits of having a preferential tariff,” says Jason Lyons, Business Development Manager at Beefy’s. “Having these insights from EnergyFlex puts us in a strong position in upcoming energy supply agreement negotiations. Without them, energy costs might have become a challenge.”

Veterans at the vanguard of the energy transition

EnergyFlex was co-founded by former Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) veterans Garry Harding and Craig Phasey and has been several years in the making. Their pathways crossed post-service when they leveraged their very different experiences to address complex system challenges, initially offering consulting services to Queensland’s Coal Seam Gas industry. Here, they pioneered an approach to enhance energy situational awareness and promote operational flexibility, recognising that these principles had applications far beyond the defence sector. And that’s how EnergyFlex came about.

With the support of Glenn Keys AO, Founder and Executive Chair of health services provider Aspen Medical, the EnergyFlex app and web platform are poised to ease the transition to a renewable energy grid by helping Australian households and businesses shift their energy usage into cleaner, cheaper periods.

“I have invested in EnergyFlex because it’s one of the most logical approaches to climate change that I have seen. The concept of aligning energy use to the inevitable changes that will come from the transition to renewables – and then creating a rating that measures that alignment – is not only smart, but inspired,” says Glenn.

“When it comes to climate action, we need exactly that: action. It’s time to get everyone around the table to address climate change. Failure to solve this seemingly insurmountable problem is not an option that many of us are willing to accept. EnergyFlex makes it possible for everyday consumers to take action at a personal level, rather than wait for others to address it”.

Key features of the EnergyFlex app:

  • Personalised insights: Learn how and when you use energy, and how those patterns impact your bills and carbon emissions.
  • Actionable recommendations: No-cost, low-cost, and investment-level changes to improve your EnergyFlex Rating, lower electricity bills, and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Progress tracking: See how changes in your energy habits improve your EnergyFlex Rating over time.
  • Tailored expert advice: EnergyFlex users can book a 1:1 consultation with an energy expert who will assess their energy profile and identify opportunities to increase the value of their Energy Asset.

EnergyFlex enables businesses to transform their energy usage profile into an asset, rather than a liability, by changing the timing of their energy use,” says Garry. “We bring these capabilities to any size or style of consumer – for free – helping them think differently about sustainability and futureproof their operations in an evolving energy market.”
